Does Strength Training Improve Running Economy?

Two 2024 meta-analyses clarify which strength methods improved economy or performance in studied distance runners and where the evidence stops.

Runner World interpretation: Two systematic reviews with meta-analysis evaluated strength training in middle- and long-distance runners. One examined running economy, while the other examined running performance and determinants such as maximal oxygen uptake. The results support a qualified conclusion: some strength-training methods improved selected outcomes in the studied runners, but effects differed by method and outcome. What running economy means here

Peer-reviewed finding: The running-economy review defined economy as the energy demand of running at a submaximal speed. It included middle- and long-distance runners across moderate, well-trained and highly trained groups and compared strength interventions with endurance-running control conditions. Runner World interpretation: Running economy is one contributor to performance, not a complete performance score. An improvement in this laboratory outcome should not be relabeled as a certain race result, and a finding in trained distance runners should not be assumed to apply identically to every beginner or sprinter. High-load and combined methods

Peer-reviewed finding: The economy review found small improvement after high-load strength training and moderate improvement after programs combining two or more strength methods. Its evidence certainty was moderate for high-load training but low for combined methods, so the larger pooled combined effect came with greater uncertainty. Evidence basis: PMID 38165636

Peer-reviewed finding: The performance review also found improvements in time-trial or time-to-exhaustion performance after high-load and combined training. It reported moderate and large pooled effects respectively, while rating the certainty across its evidence from very low to moderate. Evidence basis: PMID 38627351

Plyometric and other methods differ

Peer-reviewed finding: Plyometric training improved running economy at assessed speeds up to 12 kilometers per hour in the economy review. That same review did not find improved economy after submaximal-load or isometric strength training compared with control conditions. Evidence basis: PMID 38165636

Runner World interpretation: The performance review did not find a statistically significant overall performance effect for plyometric training, while the economy review found an effect for economy at lower assessed speeds. Performance changed without every determinant

Peer-reviewed finding: In the performance review, none of the strength-training methods improved maximal oxygen uptake, velocity at maximal oxygen uptake, maximum metabolic steady state or sprint capacity. High-load and combined methods nevertheless improved the review’s pooled running-performance outcome. Evidence basis: PMID 38627351

Runner World interpretation: Those findings show why an outcome must be named precisely. The review supports a performance conclusion for selected methods without demonstrating that every measured physiological determinant changed, and it does not show that raising maximal oxygen uptake is the mechanism behind the reported performance effect. The reviews do not prescribe one plan

Peer-reviewed finding: Programs in the economy review lasted six to 24 weeks and used one to four strength sessions per week. Programs in the performance review lasted six to 40 weeks and also used one to four weekly sessions, with substantial variation in method and participants. Runner World interpretation: Those study ranges describe what the reviews included; they do not identify an ideal frequency, starting load, exercise selection or progression for an individual.
