Fast Times in Tokyo

Fast times came at the Tokyo : Speed : Race in the Japanese capital on Saturday.

It may be four months until Tokyo hosts the World Championships, but a number of ASICS’ best athletes headed to the Japanese capital. Rather than the track, it was in search of a fast time on the road. Held as part of the launch of the new METASPEED Tokyo series, the Tokyo:Speed:Race incorporated races over 5k and 10k. Just six days after racing at the London Marathon, Phil Sesemann acted as a pacemaker in the 10k – the sole British representative.

With the Tokyo National Stadium as the backdrop, the races saw ten National Records and three Area Records set. They included a European Record over 5k for Italian Nadia Battocletti of 14:32. Additional 5k National Records were set by Sarah Lahti (Sweden), Ismail Mohamed (Djibouti), Maxime Chaumeton (South Africa) and Tomoki Ota (Japan). Wins went to Caroline Nyaga (14:19) and Harbert Kibet (13:00).

Joy Cheptoyek (30:22) and Jemal Yimer (27:10) won the 10k. Australian Records were set by Isobel Batt-Doyle (30:44) and Sam Clifford (27:34), with an American Record for Simbassa Abbabiya (27:32). Mekdes Woldu improved the French Record to 31:01.
