Ireland takes to the roads on St. Patrick’s Day

To start the week Lindie Naughton brings us all the Irish endurance action and news from the weekend just gone (Monday 17th March).

Clonliffe Harriers made it a double at the Tallaght 5km on St Patrick’s Day, with Ben Guiden the overall race winner and Helena Butterly first woman.

On an entirely new course which took in two laps of the local college, Guiden led from early on and finished a clear winner in  15 min 9 secs. Eddie O’Connor of Rathfarnham WSAF AC was second in 13:31 and previous winner Tomás Fitzpatrick of  organising club Tallaght AC  third and first M40 in 15.39.

Butterly had an equally emphatic victory crossing the line  with almost half a minute to spare in 16 mins 54 secs. Orla Walsh of Crusaders was second in 17:22 and Faye Dervan of Dublin City Harriers third in 17.27. Fourth and first W40  in 17.59 was Rachel Murphy of Plant-Based AC.

Age group winners included Aidan Murphy (Dundrum South Dublin AC)   M45,  Lea Fulcher (Plant-Based AC) M50, Seamus Boylan (Brothers Pearse) M55, Tom Cuddy (Rathfarnham WSAF AC) M65, Janice Doyle (Brothers Pearse AC)  W45, Catherine Brogan (Portmarnock AC) W50,  Lucy Darcy (Sportsworld AC) W55, Fiona Byrne (Civil Service Harriers) W60, Liz Arkins (Lucan Harriers) W65 and Una Reilly (Liffey Valley AC) W70.

In the team competition,  it was again Clonliffe Harriers on the  double. Tallaght AC and DSD AC were second and third of the men, while DCH and Liffey Valley were second and third of the women.

Winners of the novice titles were Lee Duddy (Clonliffe Harriers), followed by Aidan Murphy (DSD AC) and Shane Heneghan (Dublin Front Runners) of the men and  Orla Walshe (Crusaders AC), Rachel Murphy (Plant-Based AC) and Bonnie-may McFeat (DuCH ) of the women. Top three novice women’s teams were (provisionally)  Liffey Valley, Sportsworld and Clonliffe Harriers. The top three men’s teams were Clonliffe Harriers, Dundrum South Dublin and Tallaght AC.

Racing on the streets

Meanwhile in  Co Laois, Dundrum South Dublin made a winning start to their defence of the Peugeot Race Series title by finishing first team  ahead of St Abban’s AC and Kilkenny City Harriers at the Streets of Portlaoise 5km.

In a competitive race up front, Killian Mooney of DSD race, has just two seconds to spare when he finished in 14 mins 57 secs, with David Mansfield (Clonmel AC)  second in 14:59.  Even closer was the women’s race where Hannah Steeds (Leevale AC) sprinted clear of Eimear Maher (DSD AC), with the pair given times of 16:46 and 16:47.

Sean Doran (Clonliffe Harriers)  was the winner of the Skerries 10km on Sunday (March 16) with a time of 33 mins 13 secs. Second in 33:28 was Jamie Kavanagh Shiels. First woman with a time of  37:50 was Sarah-Grace Breen. In the age groups, Alan O’Dowd (Balbriggan and District AC) was first M50 in 39:09.  Clonliffe was the winning men’s team with home team Skerries second and Lusk AC third.  Best of the women’s teams was Portmarnock AC, led by Dee Magee in sixth place. Lusk AC was second and Raheny Shamrock third.

In a close finish to the Mullingar Half Marathon,  Evan Fitzgerald  (Clonmel AC) was the winner in 67 mins 28 secs with Jake O’Regan (St John’s AC) second in 67:31. Third in 69:27 was triathlete Ronan Potterton.  Top three women were Elizabeth Carr (Mullingar Harriers) in76:21, Fiona Stack (Raheny Shamrock,W40) in 69:55 and American visitor  Megan Brockett in 83:45. A total  of 1,512 completed the race.

Winners at the Kilsheelan 10-Mile in Co Tipperary were Barry Hartnett (Dundrum AC ) I 54:40 and Grace Reilly (Abbeyleix, W40) in 66:29.

At the Spar Craic 10km in Belfast,  Brhane Gebrebrhan was the winner in 31 mins 09 secs with his Annadale Striders clubmate Stephen Connolly second in 31:20 and  junior athlete Oisin McGlynn (Lagan Valley ) third in 31:43.  On a good day for Annadale, Lea Adamson was first woman in 34:23, followed by Gladys Ganiel (North Belfast Harriers, W45)  in 36:19 and Sarah Lavery (Beechmount Harriers)  in 36:47.

Sunday racing

At the Limerick Race Series 4-Mile, it was Bilboa AC on the double with Declan Moore (Bilboa AC) in 19:36  the overall winner and Pamela Kirby  first woman and first W40 in 25:39. Niall Shanahan (An Brú AC) in 20:13 was second  overall and Niall O’Callaghan (West Limerick AC) third in 21:08. Sinead McDermott (Dooneen AC) was second woman in 25:45 and Grace O’Donnell (West Limerick AC, W40) third in 26:16. Winning senior teams were the West Limerick men  and the Dooneen women.

Popular road races of all distances

In Co Cork, Sean Davin (St Finbarr’s AC) was the winner of the sold-out Garretstown 5-Mile in a course record time of 26:05. Naoise Ó Flaitheartaigh (Bandon AC) was second in 27:24 and Donncha Kiely (Tracton AC) third and first M40 in 27:42.

The ageless Linda Kelly (Watergrasshill C) was first woman and first W50 in 31:23. Courcey’s AC  W40 masters  Sinead O’Regan and Suzanne Foley finished second and third  in 33:29 and 34.)5 respectively.

Patrick Sheridan (Newcastle AC won the 25th Jimmy’s 10km in Downpatrick, with his time of in 31mins 51 secs giving him almost a minute to spare on Christopher Dean (Willowfield Harriers) who was second in 32:47. Third in 33:08 was Patrick McNiff (Newcastle AC)/First home of th women was Catherine O’Connor (East Down AC, W40) in 36:31.

At the inaugural Run Portumna 10km, the winners were Ann Marie Smith and James Moran.

Saturday’s not just for dancing

A  day earlier, at the Washingbay Green Run,  organsied by Derrylaughan GFC in Coalisland, Co Tyrone on Saturday (March 15), Eoin Mullan won the half marathon in 69.59, with Denise McCann (Galbally Runners, W35) first woman in 94:27.

Winners of the 10km were Connor Smyth (Galbally Runners)  in 34:59  and Patricia O’Hagan  (St Peter’s AC, W40)  in 38.48.  First home in the 5km was Martin Cox in 16:15, with Aimee Mullin (Galbally Runners) first woman  in 18:53. Second and third were Sinead Murtagh (Newcastle AC, W40) and Eimear McCracken (Annadale Striders, W40) who crossed the line together in 39:06

Indoors

Ava O’Connor (Tullamore Harriers)  finished third in the mile at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships in Indiana Falls, Indianapolis on Friday (March 14)in an impressive time of 4:41.87.

Good luck to  European champion Sarah Healy (UCD AC) who races in the women’s 3000m final (there are no heats)  at the World Indoors in Nanjing, China on Saturday. The race starts at 11.15am Irish time.
