To start the week Lindie Naughton brings us all the Irish endurance action and news from the weekend just gone (Monday 3rd March).
John Travers (Donore Harriers) and Ann-Marie McGlynn (Letterkenny AC) were the winners at the Lusk 4-Mile road race held on Sunday (March 2), leading home a capacity entry of almost a thousand with 869 finishers in all.
Travers’ time of 18 mins 43 sec saw him finish comfortably ahead the chasers led by Sean Cronin (Clonliffe Harriers) second in 19:05 and Conor Duffy (Glaslough Harriers) third in 19:28.
McGlynn finished in 20:30 with Íde Nic Dhomhnaill (West Limerick AC) second in 20:43 and Jessica Craig (North Down AC) third in 21:08.
Winners at the Naas 10-Mile, also on Sunday, were Tim Murphy (Mullingar Harriers) in 53:25 and Elizabeth Carr (Mullingar Harriers) in 58:35. Karl Nolan (Clonliffe Harriers) and Sonya McConnon (DSD) made it a Dublin double in the over 40 class.
Winners at the Munster 4-Mile Road Championships, in Dungarvan, Co Waterford, were Lucy Holmes (West Waterford AC) in 22:59 and Paul Hartnett (East Cork AC) in 19.29; Hartnett was also first novice.
Senior men’s team winners were Cork Track Club, with East Cork AC a close second and Ferrybank AC third.
Among the masters winners were Eileen McCullagh (Moyne AC) first W40 in 24:49, Ann Marie Connellan (Ennis TC) first W50 in 24:15, Niamh O’Sullivan (An Riocht) first W60 in 25:31, Dermot Gorman (Carrick-on-Suir AC) first M40 in 20:28, Liam O’Connor (Grange Fermoy SC) first M50 in 20:45 and Eamonn McEvoy (St Finbarr’s AC) first M70 in 26:32.
Road racing season in full swing now
Leading home the 442 finishers at the Cork BHAA MTU 5km at Bishopstown, Cork, was Conor McAuley in 15:42. Lizzie Lee was tenth overall and first woman in 17:43, with both running for Apple. Winning teams in the A grade were the UCC men and the Phoenix Clinic women.
Winners at the Stone Mad Half Marathon in Blarney. Co Cork were Evan Fitzgerald in 68:17 and April Quinn in 82:13.
A day earlier, Jake Regan (St John’s AC) clocked a time of 50 mins 39 secs to win the Bundoran 10-Mile, in Co Donegal on Saturday (March 1). Kyle Doherty (City of Derry Spartans AC) was second in 51:10 and Eoin Mullan (Omagh Harriers) third and first M40 in 52:09.
First woman in 60:34 was Maria Ní Mhalagáin (Rosses AC). Fiona Stack (Raheny ShamrockAC) was second and first W40 in 61:29, with Aimee Mullan (Galbally Runners) third in 62:18. First W50 was ultra runner Julie McNamee (Tir Chonaill AC ) in 70:13. First M50 was Stephen Duncan (Omagh Harriers) in 56:08. Galbally Runners was the winning women’s team, with Omagh Harriers best of the men.
Also on Saturday, Eddie O’Connor (Brothers Pearse AC) was the winner of the Moneystown 4-Mile Garden Run in Ballinacoola, Co Wicklow, with a time of 20 mins 31 secs. Racing machine Sean Doran (Clonliffe Harriers) was second in 20:39 and Robin Mooney (Sli Cualann AC) third in 21:08. Fourth and first M40 was Aidan Murphy (Dundrum South Dublin AC) in 21:34.
Catherine Devitt (Glendalough Harriers, W40) was first woman in 23:53 followed by her clubmate Donna Quinn in 26:24. Aoife Kavanagh was third in 26:35.

Cross country – BHAA and Meet and Train colloborate
Paul Fleming (Ornua/RathfarnhamWSAF AC) ran a typically canny race to win the BHAA AIB men’s 4-mile race held at the National Cross-County Course, Abbotstown, on Sunday (March 2).
In the women’s’ 2-mile race run in conjunction with Women’s Meet and Train, Lisa Gaughan (DSD AC) was not only first overall but was winning her third race in the Meet and Train Winter League. Finished second was her club mate Ruth Wilson, while third was Rachel Calvey (Sportsworld AC).
The Meet and Train League will end with a fun run and prize-giving hosted by Crusaders AC at Irishtown on Sunday April 6 (11am).
Next for BHAA runners is the final cross-country of the season hosted by the ALSAA at its Dublin Airport grounds on Saturday next March 8 (11am). Details www.bhaa.ie
Indoors
Cathal Doyle (Clonliffe Harriers) finished fifth in the men’s 1500m in a time of 3:39.62 at the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold final round in Madrid Spain on Friday, (February 28). His season’s best indoors time was 3:37.39 run in Liévin, France, on February 13. His outdoor best for 1500m is 3:33.15. Doyle now heads for Apeldoorn in the Netherlands where he will compete in the European Indoor Championships for the first time.
At the Leinster Indoor Championships held at the NIA, Abbotstown on Saturday (March 1), Dundrum South Dublin made it a double in the 800m, with Charlotte Bourke winning the women’s race in 2 mins 15.15 secs and Joe Hastings first home in the men’s race in 1:54.85.
A solid winner of the senior men’s 1500m title was Juan Ignacio Peña (Raheny Shamrock) in 3:49.32. Over 3000m, Cian McDonald (Ballyroan Abbeyleix and District AC) won the senior men’s race in 8:49.45. Mark Ryan (Rathfarnham WSAF) was a clear winner of the masters’ race and also first M45 in 9:09.57. Alex Murphy (Suncroft AC) won the women’s senior 3000m title in 9:56.62.
At the sixth and final Track and Field Live meet of the season held at the NIA Abbotstown on Wednesday (February 26), Sean Tobin (Clonmel AC) won the men’s mile in 4:03.14. Lughaidh Mallon (UCD AC) was second in 4:03.85 and Juan Ignacio Peña (Raheny Shamrock) third with a time of 4:04.09.
