Healy Impresses Again – Irish Round Up

Another fast week of Irish racing action has drawn to a close, as Lindie Naughton reports.

Sarah Healy (UCD AC) moved into second place on the all-time Irish rankings when clocking a time of 3:57.15 for a fighting second place behind Kenya’s Nelly Chepchirchir in the 1500m at the Paris Diamond League on Friday (June 20). With a time of 3:55.87 from 2023, Ciara Mageean tops the records list.

In the men’s 800m, Mark English (Finn Valley AC) finished sixth in 1:43.98. That is his second sub-1:44 time.

Irish athletes were competing at meets in France, German and Finland as well as at the two BMC meets last week.

At the Meeting International d’Athletisme de Troyes Aube in France on Sunday (June 22), Shane Bracken finished fourth in the 1500m with a time of 3:36.82.

Winning the women’s 3000m in a time of 8:55.87 at the Motonet GP Kuortane in Finland, also on Saturday, was Roisin Flanagan. She will line out for the Irish team at the European Team Championships in Slovenia next weekend. At the Anhalt Meeting in Dessau, Germany, James Gormley (Carmen Runners) finished seventh in the 1500m in 3:37.21.

At the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland on Tuesday (June 17), Cathal Doyle (Clonliffe Harriers) finished fourth in the 1500m. His time of 3:35.00 was slower than the PB of 3:32.15 he ran in Rome eleven days earlier. Andrew Coscoran (Star of the Sea AC) was ninth in 3:36.72.

Across the Sea & Closer to Home

At the BMC Grand Prix in Loughborough on Saturday, England-based Ella Fennelly (Dundrum South Dublin AC) won the women’s A 3000m in a PB time of 9:17.87, with Danielle Donegan (Tullamore Harriers) second in 9:20.46. Sean Tobin (Clonmel) finished third in the men’s A 3000m in 8:03.22, while Robert Hewison (Kildare AC) finished fourth in the A 800m in a PB of 1:48.54.

At the St Mary’s University BMC meet on Wednesday (June 18), Nadine Donegan (Tullamore Harriers and Belgrave Harriers) finished fifth in the women’s A 1500m in 4:22.38. In the men’s A 1500m, Lughaidh Mallon (Lagan Valley AC) finished tenth in 3:39.89.

Locally, at the UCD Athletics Meet in Belfield on Wednesday (June 18) Australian visitor Hamish Donohue won the A grade men’s 800m in 1:48.68, with Callum Hurley (Ferrybank AC) second in 1:49.04 and Finn Woodger (MSB AC) third in 1:49.22. Winning the women’s 800m in 2:05.94 was Lucy Holmes (West Waterford).

Holly Carroll (Blarney Inniscarra AC) sprinted home for victory in the A women’s 1500m race in 4:24.92. Winning the men’s A race was Wolfgang Cotra Nemesi from Australia in 3:50.80. Cian Kelly (St Abban’s AC) was second in 3:51.46 and Daniel Buckley (Leevale) third in 3:52.93.

Winning the men’s 3000m in 8:13.86 was Jonas Stafford (UCD). Mark Hanrahan (Ennis TC) was second in 8:28.94.

On the Roads

Road race of the week was the Michael Manning 10km in Dunshaughlin, Co Meath, where David McGlynn (West Waterford AC) raced away from Tadhg Donnelly (Drogheda and District AC) for victory in 29 mins 30 secs. Donnelly was seven seconds behind in 29:37. Third in 30:01 was Hugh Armstrong (Ballina AC). Fourth and first M40 was Michael Harty (East Cork AC) in 30:14.

The first Dublin athlete was Ian Guiden (Clonliffe Harriers) who finished seventh in 30:48. The first woman was Dublin-based Íde Nic Dhomhnaill (West Limerick AC, W40) in 33:16. Ann-Marie McGlynn (Strabane AC) was second in 33:39 and Alex Murphy (UCD AC) third in 35:26. Quote of the day came from MgGlynn on Instagram: ‘Thanks for a great race. I’ll be back but please turn the temperature down next year!’.

Well over one hundred teams are registered for the race and winning the Peugeot Series team prize for mixed teams was Dundrum South Dublin AC. Sportsworld proved best of the 42 women’s teams entered, with Drogheda and District winning the men’s team prize; an astounding 62 teams had entered.

A day later, Peter Somba (Ballyskenach AC), now living in Co Tipperary, had his first win in some time at the Jack Cox 10km, in Kilcormac, Co Offaly. He finished in 32:48. Second in 32:59 was Paul Michell, with his Tullamore Harriers clubmate Kevin Minnock third in 33:17. Finishing seventh and first woman in 35:22 was Heather Murphy (St Michael’s AC) . The race was Round 2 of the popular Offaly Endurance Series.

Sunday Racing

Paul O’Reilly (Mullingar Harriers) in 60 mins 37 secs and Charlotte Kearney (Donadea RC) in 71:54 were winners at the Derravaragh 10-Mile road race held at Derravaragh Holiday Park, Multyfarnham, Co Westmeath on Sunday (June 22). First home in the 5-mile with a time of 25:36 was Aaron Donnelly (DSD AC). Jacinta Reilly (Mullingar Harriers) was first woman in 34:31.

Winning the Piercetown Wexford Bus 5km with a time of  15:53 was Jack Butler (SBR Ferns AC). Maeve Boland (Eagle AC) was first woman in 19:54.

Leading home 2,302 finishers at the Belfast City Women’s 10km, in the Titanic Quarter on Sunday, was Lea Adamson (Annadale Striders) in 36 mins 11 secs. Judith Storm. (City of Derry Spartans) was second in 37:18 and Catriona Edington (Annadale Striders) third in 35:77.

Midweek

Winning the Long Woman’s 5km at Omeath, in Co Louth on Friday (June 20) was Patrick Kiernan (North East Runners) in 18:15. Hayley McAteer (City of Lisburn AC) was the first woman in 19:35.

Sean Dineen (Cork TC) raced to a clear victory at the Donoughmore 7-Mile, in Co Cork  on Thursday (June 19). His time of 39 mins 19 secs out him well clear of  St Finbarr’s pair Nathan Ryan O’Hehir in 40:53 and Brian Mullins in 42:43. Mullins was also first M45.  Finishing tenth and first woman in 45:05 was Catherine Murphy (Eagle AC, W45). Breda Gaffney (Mallow AC, W50) was second in 45:39 and Breeda McGinn third in 46:29.

At the Dave Fogarty Memorial 4-Mile, in Thurles, Co Tipperary, also on Thursday, the winners were Shane Moloney (Thurles Crokes) in 22.26 and Dymphna Ryan (Dundrum AC) in 23.18.

Patrick McColl led home well over a thousand finishers at the Lisburn Half Marathon in Co Antrim on Wednesday (June 18) crossing the line in 71 mins 22 secs. Second in 72.00 was Adam Smyth ( St Peter’s AC), while third in 72:30 was Shane Donnelly (Strive RC). Gillian McCrory (St Peter’s AC, W45) in 85 :04 was first woman with Kate Mulholland second in 87:04 and Naomi McGuckin (Seapark AC) third in 87:31. Making it an Annadale double in the associated 10km were Cameron Stewart  in 31:53 and Hannah Gilliland in a solid time of 33:59.

Winners of the Cork BHAA Apple Employees’ SSC 5km, in Hollyhill, Cork on Tuesday (June 17) were Nathan O’Leary 15 mins 49  secs and Lizzie Lee in 17.50.
