Community Coordinator Spotlight: Lisa Hahn

Lisa Hahn – HKRS Downers Grove, IL

How many seasons have you been a Community Coordinator?

10 seasons! Fall 2020-Present

Tell us about yourself! What inspired you to join HKRS?

Sports have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I started gymnastics at just two years old! In high school, I joined the track and field team, focusing mostly on middle-distance events. Then, during my senior year, the IHSA finally opened up pole vaulting to girls—and I jumped at the opportunity (literally!). I competed in the very first state competition for girls’ pole vault and made it to the finals, which earned me a scholarship to Eastern Illinois University—Go Blue!

At EIU, I met Nick, also known as “Mr. Megaphone.” Despite all my years of athletic training, I had never run long distances until 2007, when I completed my first 5K in support of the American Brain Tumor Association. That race changed everything. It was inspired by my love for my Grandma, who bravely fought brain cancer until her passing in 2010. Honoring her memory and supporting brain cancer awareness became my mission, and I became a running fool! I went on to complete countless 5Ks, 10Ks, half marathons, and full marathons.

My career as a PE and Health teacher, as well as a coach, was one of the most fulfilling chapters of my life. I loved inspiring kids to see the value of lifelong health and wellness. I later made the decision to pause that career to focus on raising my family. I’m now a proud mom of four beautiful children!

My second child, Camryn, introduced us to the Healthy Kids Running Series (HKRS). She participated in her first virtual series in 2020, and the following season, I became the local coordinator. This role has been such a gift—it allows me to combine my love of coaching with the joy of motherhood in a way that works for our family. I absolutely love it!

What is the biggest success as a Coordinator (or favorite race day moment)?

Race #1 as a coordinator was by far my most unforgettable moment. I was overwhelmed with emotion seeing the community come together—especially as the world was just beginning to reopen after the pandemic. Nearly 375 participants and their families showed up, filling the space with energy, laughter, and connection. I found myself tearing up multiple times—the sights, sounds, and emotions were simply incredible.

What makes your community special?

Downers Grove Village is a special place because it’s down-to-earth, rooted in genuine community values, where people support each other and take pride in simple, meaningful progress. That same spirit is at the heart of our youth running program, where young athletes grow not just in speed and strength, but in character, grounded, humble, and driven by teamwork, perseverance, and a love for the journey.

What’s some advice you would like to share with fellow Community Coordinators?

Don’t stress over the small stuff—participants, families, and sponsors are genuinely excited to support and be part of the mission
